US Consumer Confidence Falls to 81.9, JOLTS Drops to 7.08 Million
The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index fell to 81.9, its lowest level since 2014, while JOLTS job openings dropped to 7.08 million. Even so, inflation and debt supply concerns, rather than growth concerns, continue to drive the markets.
US Bond Yields Near Two-Decade Highs
The US 10-year Treasury yield is above 5.2% and the 30-year yield is above 5.5%, both close to their highest levels in about twenty years. The rise in yields is supporting the US dollar's gain of about 2% in September and its progress toward its strongest monthly performance since June.
Spot Gold Tests Around $4,180
Spot gold is testing the $4,180 level after the sharp drop in the previous session. High real yields and a strong dollar continue to be the main fundamental pressure on gold.
Energy Prices and Inflation Concerns in Focus
US equity markets are moving in a narrow range between high energy prices and high bond yields. The Cleveland Fed forecasting model points to August PCE inflation of about 3.8% year on year and core PCE of about 3.4%.
