Michigan Consumer Sentiment Final Reading Edges Up, Inflation Expectations at Highest Since June
The University of Michigan's final September consumer sentiment index edged up from the preliminary reading of 47.8 to 48.1. Meanwhile, one-year inflation expectations rose to 4.6%, the highest since June, while five-year inflation expectations climbed to 3.4%, and consumers' perception of their current and year-ahead personal finances weakened by about 10% this month. The rising inflation expectations reinforced markets' bets on an additional rate hike at the FOMC's October meeting.
Gold Falls to $4,270: Worst Week in About Four Weeks
Rising inflation expectations following the University of Michigan data and a strengthening dollar added to the pressure on gold. Gold fell to around $4,270 an ounce, on track to close the week down more than 2%, its worst weekly performance in about four weeks; silver also lost value in the same environment. The decline was driven by a strong dollar, rising real yields and hawkish Fed expectations.
Dollar Set to Close the Week Up More Than 1%: Euro Heads for Third Straight Weekly Decline
The dollar index (DXY) touched a roughly two-month high of 101.40 on Friday before easing back toward 101.00, yet is still on track to close the week up more than 1%. Against this backdrop, the euro slipped to 1.1370 against the dollar, nearing a roughly two-month low and heading for its third straight weekly decline; sterling hovered around 1.3220, near a roughly three-month low, on track for its worst week in about four months. The dollar's strength through the week was fueled by hawkish remarks from Fed officials and strengthening bets on an October rate hike.
