US August PPI Data: Up 0.4% Monthly, 5.4% Annually
According to data released by the US Department of Labor on Thursday at 08.30 (ET), the final demand Producer Price Index (PPI) rose 0.4% in August from the prior month, in line with market expectations. On a non-seasonally adjusted basis, the annual PPI increase came in at 5.4%. Core PPI, which excludes food, energy, and trade services, rose 0.3% month-on-month and 4.7% year-on-year. More than three-quarters of the increase stemmed from a 4.2% rise in energy prices, while a significant share of the rise in goods prices came from diesel fuel prices, which jumped 24.1%.
All Three Major Wall Street Indexes Closed the Day Lower
Under pressure from rising Treasury yields following the PPI data and oil prices holding above $100, all three major Wall Street indexes closed the day in the red: the Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 405.41 points (0.77%) to close at 52,380.66; the Nasdaq Composite dropped 168.07 points (0.64%) to 26,253.34; the S&P 500 slipped 0.45% to close the day at 7,638.95.
Brent Holds Above $101 as Treasury Yields Hit Highest Since 2023
Brent crude climbed 3.4% to $101.21 on Wednesday, marking its highest close since 22 May; it held above $101 on Thursday as well. Continued tension in the Strait of Hormuz kept concerns over energy supply alive, supporting prices. The same pressure spilled over into the bond market; the US 10-year Treasury yield climbed to its highest level since 2023 amid rising inflation concerns.
