CENTCOM Strikes IRGC Targets in Iran, Tehran Retaliates
US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that it completed a strike wave on September 1 targeting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' (IRGC) air defense systems, radars, naval assets and facilities, mining capabilities, and communication centers. The strikes were conducted in response to the IRGC's actions against commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. In retaliation on the same day, Iran launched missile and UAV attacks against US bases and assets in Jordan, Bahrain, Iraq, and Kuwait; the Iranian military issued statements claiming it would deliver "crushing and destructive blows" against the US.
Oil Surges Sharply: Brent Above %2 at 96,59 Dollars
Following the mutual strikes, Brent crude rose over %2 to 96,59 dollars, while WTI crude oil increased by %1,73 to 91,78 dollars. Market participants believe that if the Iran-US conflict persists, oil prices will maintain their high and volatile course; negotiations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz have largely come to a standstill.
Gold Fails to Recover Despite Geopolitical Risk
While escalating Middle East tensions were expected to increase traditional safe-haven demand, XAU/USD maintained its suppressed course around 4.300 dollars. Alongside rising oil prices and US bond yields, strengthening expectations of a September rate hike following Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's speech at Jackson Hole largely offset the support provided to gold by the geopolitical risk premium.
