Oil Rose Over %3 Following US Strike on Iran
On Sunday, the US military struck two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island near the Strait of Hormuz determined to be preparing to lay sea mines. The strike, confirmed by US Central Command (CENTCOM) spokesperson Captain Tim Hawkins, was the first direct military action following nearly a month of calm. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced casualties and injuries from the attack and declared that they would "retaliate". Following the development, crude oil prices rose sharply: Brent oil rose over %3 above 91 dollars, while WTI crude oil rose over %3 above 86 dollars.
Wall Street Futures Declined, Strong Monthly Outlook Maintained
Following news of the attack on Iran, US index futures dipped slightly; S&P 500 futures fell %0,12, Nasdaq 100 futures fell %0,11, while Dow Jones futures traded flat. Despite this, Wall Street maintains a strong outlook across the month: Dow Jones is up %2,1 month-to-date, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite are heading toward their first monthly gains since May with increases of approximately %3 and %4 respectively.
Yen Breached 160 Threshold, Intervention Possibility Back on the Table
USD/JPY fell to the 160,20 level with a %0,5 decline on Friday after Fed Chair Warsh's hawkish Jackson Hole stance supported the dollar. Market strategists point to the 161 and then 162-163 range as threshold levels where Japanese authorities could intervene in the market again if the yen weakens further. The yen has already given back more than half of the value it gained during the record intervention period late last month.
Dollar Index Maintains Strong Course Post-Warsh
The US Dollar is trading in a narrow band against major rivals in the Asian session after recording its strongest gain in nearly a month following Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish Jackson Hole remarks. Rising September rate hike expectations remain the main factor supporting the dollar.
