This article was written on August 28, before Warsh's Jackson Hole speech; the prices inside represent that day's picture. Warsh gave his speech on August 28 and his tone came out hawkish: he stated that inflation is still too high, that the better inflation readings this summer do not show that the underlying trend has meaningfully improved, and that interest rate hikes may be necessary in the coming months. The 33.9% September pricing in the text shifted significantly upward after the speech; these lines were left as they showed the picture that day. The main subject of the article, the short squeeze mechanism, is independent of price and remains valid as is.
On August 20, Bitcoin was in the 68,000-69,000 dollar band. At the August 27 close, the price was 79,027 dollars, daily change +0.59%. In the intervening eight days, the market saw above 80,000 dollars, also surpassed 81,000 dollars, and then pulled back. The support region currently discussed is the lower band of 79,000 dollars.
The reference point that makes this move even more remarkable is the low close of the year: 59,963 dollars. In other words, looking from its annual low, Bitcoin is in a serious recovery and had significantly moved away from this low even as of August 20. The final eight-day leg was added on top of this recovery.
It is easy to summarize this kind of move as "the bull market is back," but it is not informative. Because a significant part of the rally here came not from the appetite of new buyers, but from existing sellers being forced to close their positions. Last week, in a single day, over 1.4 billion dollars of downside positions were liquidated. The purpose of this article is not to make a price prediction; it is to explain at a mechanism level how a short squeeze works, why it accelerates, and why it consumes itself. What is a short squeeze? The first link in the chain: short selling
Short selling is selling an asset you do not own. The trader thinks the price will fall; sells the asset at today's price, aims to buy it back cheaper, close the position, and book the difference as profit. In crypto derivative markets, this operation is mostly done with leveraged instruments such as perpetual contracts or CFDs; that is, the trader deposits margin, not the entire value of the asset.
Margin is the critical concept here. In a leveraged short position, the money in your account is the buffer for the loss the position can bear. If the price goes in your favor, meaning down, margin inflates. If the price goes against you, meaning up, margin begins to erode. When the erosion crosses a certain threshold, the broker or exchange requests additional margin; if additional margin does not arrive, the position is automatically closed. This is called liquidation.
Now let's come to the key point: The only way to close a short position is to BUY back the sold asset. That is, forced liquidation produces a BUY order, not a sell order. The desperation of the side expecting a fall in the market appears as a buyer in the book. The entire paradox of the mechanism lies here.
How is the chain reaction built?
A squeeze is the name of a cycle, not a single event. Step by step, it works like this:
This cycle is a self-feeding feedback loop. Liquidation occurs because the price rises, and because liquidation occurs, the price rises even further. Its difference from classic supply-demand balance is this: Most of the buyers here do not want to buy, they have to buy. No matter how irrational the price seems, a position out of margin has no choice.
In such periods, the speed of the rise significantly diverges from the speed of a normal trend move. Bitcoin rising from the 68-69 thousand band to above 80 thousand in eight days and then surpassing 81 thousand carries the signature of this kind of squeeze. The pullback following the move is also part of that same signature.

How big is a 1.4 billion dollar single-day liquidation?
Last week, it was reported that over 1.4 billion dollars of downside positions were liquidated in a single day. To read this figure correctly, two things need to be separated.
First, this 1.4 billion dollars is not lost money, but the nominal size of closed positions. In a leveraged structure, the deposited margin is a small fraction of this; the lost amount is on the margin side. Second, and more importantly, this entire nominal size is reflected in the market as buy orders. So the issue is not who bears the loss, but how much forced buying is generated in the order book.
A wave of forced buying of this scale can consume the sell levels in the order book within a few hours. This is why price moves in jumps rather than incrementally during squeeze moments; long-bodied candles and narrow pullbacks are seen on the chart. For the same reason, the expectation that technical levels will "hold" on such a day is often disappointed: There is no market will to respect the level, only a mechanical closing flow.
As a point of comparison, consider Bitcoin's price range over the same period: 68-69 thousand dollars on 20 August, and 79,027 dollars at the 27 August close. A displacement of approximately 10 thousand dollars in eight days is two different measures of the same story alongside the 1.4 billion dollars of positions liquidated in a single day.
Why does every short squeeze consume its own fuel?
This is the most misunderstood aspect of a squeeze. The movement is violent but unsustainable because its fuel is finite. The fuel is the open short positions in the market themselves. Every liquidation subtracts a portion from this pool. When there are no shorts left to liquidate, the forced buying flow also stops.
At this point, only voluntary buyers remain. Voluntary buyers at the 81 thousand dollar level have no mechanical compulsion to buy an asset that traded at 68 thousand dollars a few days ago; they look at the price, evaluate, and can choose to wait. As buy-side pressure suddenly drops while profit-taking kicks in on the sell side, the balance shifts rapidly.
It is possible to interpret Bitcoin's pullback after surpassing 81,000 dollars within this framework. This is not a prediction, but the natural result of the mechanism: Levels reached through forced buying flow remain vulnerable once that flow stops. The price seeking support around the lower band of 79,000 dollars is a continuation of the same logic — the market tests where non-mechanical real demand actually lies.
The practical conclusion drawn from this is: Highs produced by a squeeze are not defended with the same volume. If you cannot distinguish how much of a move comes from forced buying versus real demand, counting that high as trend confirmation is risky. How does a trader spot signs of a squeeze?
It is impossible to know a squeeze in advance with certainty; however, there are observable data showing that conditions are maturing. None of these are standalone signals; they are read together. All of the headings below can be tracked from major crypto exchanges' own derivative data pages, exchange APIs, and analytics platforms collecting derivative market data; you can also access the basic definitions of these concepts in FXPARTNER Academy content.
When you read these indicators together, a picture emerges: Crowded short positioning, high open interest, and a dense liquidation cluster right above the price. If all three exist simultaneously, the environment is suitable for a squeeze. Still, a "suitable environment" and an "impending movement" are not the same thing; this data serves to manage probability, not produce certainty.
The reverse is equally valid: When the same indicators show extreme long accumulation, a downward long squeeze setup forms this time. The mechanism is symmetrical; only the direction changes.
- –Funding rates: The rate paid periodically between long and short sides in perpetual contracts. Turning persistently negative indicates that the short side is becoming crowded — meaning fuel is building up for a squeeze.
- –Open interest: The total size of derivative contracts remaining open in the market. An increase in open interest while prices move sideways indicates that leverage is accumulating in the system.
- –Concentrated liquidation levels: Liquidation maps show in which price regions large amounts of positions are approaching their margin limits. The proximity of these clusters to the price determines the trigger risk.
- –Divergence between spot and derivatives: The movement progressing predominantly through derivatives rather than spot volume indicates that the mechanical component of the rise is significant.
- –Speed of movement and candle structure: A rally that advances in jumps rather than incrementally, with very narrow pullbacks, is characteristic of forced buying flow.
Why aren't Ethereum, Solana, and XRP telling the same story?
The crypto market often gives the impression of moving as a single block, but data from recent days shows this is not always true. Ethereum is at the 2,506 dollar level and rose %2.58 on a daily basis. Solana is at 102.17 dollars and showed the strongest performance in the group at %5.76. XRP, on the other hand, is at 1.4224 dollars and fell %0.76.
What stands out in this table is XRP's divergence. In an environment where overall risk appetite is rising and Bitcoin exhibits a strong weekly recovery, a major asset closing in negative territory implies that something specific to that asset is at play. It is not possible to state with certainty the reason for XRP's divergence based on the available data; the divergence itself shows that the movement does not encompass all crypto assets to the same extent.
This distinction is practically important. Is the source of price movement in an asset a fundamental development, or positioning itself? Part of Bitcoin's rise was the unwinding of short positions; part of XRP's lagging performance is read as the unwinding of the long side. Both belong to the same family: What determines the price is position, not news.
The difference between Solana's %5.76 daily rise and XRP's %0.76 decline demonstrates how much correlation can break down even on the same day in the same market. For a trader holding a basket of crypto positions, this means diversification may not provide as much protection as thought; all may fall at the same time, but not all may rise at the same time.
Macro connection: what is happening today at 14:00 GMT?
Crypto has long ceased to be an asset class independent of macro. Headline PCE inflation announced on 26 August came in at an annual %3.7, above expectations (%3.6); core PCE at %3.3 was in line with expectations. Following the headline data coming in hotter than expected, the dollar strengthened across the board and Treasury yields rose. Bitcoin remained under pressure the same day, but closed 27 August at 79,027 dollars.
This reaction-recovery sequence demonstrates crypto's sensitivity to interest rate expectations. When expectations of tight monetary policy increase, risk assets come under pressure; when expectations ease, leveraged buying appetite returns. In current pricing, the Fed policy rate is in the %3.50-3.75 range and the market is pricing in virtually no rate cut. According to CME FedWatch data, the probability of a 25 basis point HIKE in September is %33.9; the probability of at least one hike by December is %74. At the July FOMC, Logan, Hammack, and Kashkari issued dissenting votes in favor of a hike.
Today's main risk is at Jackson Hole. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's first opening speech as chair will be delivered at 10:00 ET, which is 14:00 GMT. The speech comes 19 days before the September 16 FOMC meeting. This timing takes the speech beyond an ordinary symposium opening: The market will be looking for a hint regarding September.
From a crypto perspective, the mechanical link is this: If Warsh's tone is perceived as hawkish, the probability of a rate hike is priced higher, the dollar and yields strengthen, and leveraged long positions come under pressure. If such news arrives on top of a buyer base already thinned out after a squeeze, the move could work in the opposite direction via the same mechanism. Why does liquidation occur so quickly in leveraged crypto positions?

Conclusion: read the source of the movement, not the price
Bitcoin moving from the $68-69 thousand band to $79,027 in eight days, surpassing $81,000 along the way before pulling back, is not a directional indicator on its own. There are at least two different forces within this move: real demand and forced closing flow. The liquidation of over $1.4 billion in short positions in a single day shows how decisive the second force can be.
The main thing the short squeeze mechanism teaches is this: The source of a rally carries information about the sustainability of that rally. A peak generated by forced buying becomes defenseless when that compulsion ends. Funding rates, open interest, and liquidation concentrations tell a trader trying to make this distinction what the price chart alone cannot say.
Warsh's speech today at 14:00 GMT is a potential catalyst reminding us that the mechanism can work in reverse as well. In a market pricing a %33.9 probability of a rate hike in September and a %74 probability of at least one rate hike by December, the cost of holding a leveraged position is not just the spread; it is news risk. Adjusting position size accordingly is a task far more controllable than making predictions.
